Mastery Learning (Mathematics)

Elementary School

Mastery Learning has limited evidence of effectiveness for elementary school mathematics. The five qualifying studies included in this review showed effect sizes of +0.42, +1.08, +0.22, -0.18, and +0.04.

Middle/High School

Mastery Learning has insufficient evidence of effectiveness for middle/high school mathematics. Across six qualiyfing studies included in this review, the weighted mean effect size was -0.05.

About Mastery Learning

Mastery Learning is a strategy in which time to learn is adjusted to fit students’ levels of mastery. Students proceed to new material only after basic prerequisite material is mastered.
